This is a rather major update. The toolbar and borders were changed and are now looking sharper. I also switched the fonts to segoe. Making the borders sharper was tricky because I run across some limitations of the skinning engine. I used a blank shellstyle as a workaround and also made 2 separate styles: one to be used with thin borders and one to use with 6 px borders.
Let me know what you think...
Update 4/2
changed the fonts to calibri and fixed some minor glitches. The live and black skins get a thin border that makes them much more practical, without ruining the "borderless" look.
Update 27/1: option for 48px icons and a new color.
Update: I sacrificed a little in sharpness but now the skin works well with any border size. Also added a simple, bottom shellstyle showing details and a "Live" style skin.
A clean and funcional visual style. With the exception of the trademark taskbar and caption buttons, pretty much everything is designed from the ground up with special attention to ergonomics.
There is a selection of three colors that work best with 6px borders. In the screenshots you see a compact styler toolbar and next to it a working address bar. I included a registry key so you can get this layout without styler running.
While the style is pretty polished I`m working on some updates including a custom shell style. In the meantime I`d recommend the one in YAFVC2.
I tried red borders but it looked like a bit like a hospital.. Well, since I have the bitmaps ready I might as well upload it. To get thick borders you need to set "active window border size" to 6 in advanced appearance properties. There are two different files because each one works well with a set border size.
I have to admit that this is the best vista vs for xp. Just one problem that the font is not looking good even after installing fonts that comes in the package.
Oh my gosh! This VS was updated and I completely missed it (because it is listed down the list in page 2).
The new version is absolutely gorgeous. I love all the colors, especially the brown. Wish you would add more variations though. How about a metal dark green?
All the issues I had with the previous version are now fixed. Other than that there are just cosmetic details like scrollbar, buttons, selected item have a blue tone in a brown color scheme. But I realize that if you had to customize the colors for every details, it would require a lots of works.
Congratulation, this NTG VS is really the best Vista/Aero VS I have seen so far.
You should probably name it NTG2 and create a new post so it is easily visible in the "Newest" section.
Just tried Live color today. Like very much the metallic aspect of the toolbar background. However, the borderless design of some control is sometimes confusing. Example: the drop down arrow on some web page: [link]
You can also see it in some setting dialog box. Example: Firefox, Tools, Options, select Network tab, Look at the spinner control in Offline storage.
Is there a border around the window in Live and Black? When windows overlap close to the edges, it's not easy to distinguish. May be a more visible border will help. Unless you really meant a borderless design.
The live and black skins are indeed borderless designs , they were more of an experiment, as borderless skins are not very practical. Another problem they have is that it`s really hard to resize windows. As for the drop down arrow bug, I have no idea how it happened, I possibly pressed the wrong button by accident.
I do like the metallic toolbar however and will probably use it in my next skin.
I like very much the metallic toolbar background. In particular, the color glow when the mouse hoves over a button. In my opinion, this design is better than the Aero one.
Have been using with Live for 2 days now. The borderless window is rather weird. I can still get away with resizing window (because probably I don;t do this often). But when two windows overlap and they all have white background. It is really confusing. Try overlapping two Windows Explorer windows. Especially when they overlap on the left, it's just white on white.
Looking forward to the next update. And hopefully you'll add some colors too (how about dark green and brown?)
A workaround for this problem is to use the shadow feature of styler, though I can imagine not anyone likes to use it, I`m not using it myself. The problem with black borders on "borderless" designs is that it makes many windows (dialogs, system properties etc) look weird, as if the titlebar was 1px wider than the rest. I`m going to experiment with different border styles and see what I can come up with though this might take a while. I`m almost done updating the current version, I finally settled for the calibri font, trebuchet being wide caused cropped text in combo boxes a bit too often.
Adding a red shaded title bar would add more candy to the VS. Thanks for the great VS.
